Built stronger. Built to last.

Why Maverick uses full birch plywood

Not all campervan furniture is created equal.

Many campervan converters use lightweight poplar plywood because it is lighter and often cheaper. At Maverick Outdoors, we have deliberately chosen a different approach.

Every piece of our plywood furniture is now made from full birch plywood, finished with premium EGGER laminate, outdoor-grade spray lacquer and upgraded hardware.

Why? Because we believe your campervan furniture should be built for years of adventures, not just to look good in the showroom.

The difference is more than skin deep

Full birch plywood is significantly denser and stiffer than typical lightweight poplar plywood.

Published manufacturer specifications show that birch plywood can offer around 2.5 times the bending stiffness of lightweight poplar plywood. Under the same load, that can mean around 60% less flex in a panel of the same thickness.

It also gives a harder, more robust base for furniture fixings and for storage compartments that get heavy use.

In a campervan that is constantly moving, vibrating and carrying equipment, those things matter.

Premium finishes, inside and out

We do not stop at stronger plywood.

Our birch furniture is spray-finished with outdoor-grade protective lacquer, adding an extra barrier against moisture and everyday wear.

We also specify premium EGGER decorative laminate, rather than relying on an unspecified decorative surface. Genuine EGGER HPL products are tested to recognised standards for abrasion, scratch and impact resistance.

We have even redesigned our furniture to cut out unnecessary moving parts. With upgraded hinges and just one conventional cupboard door left, there is less hardware to loosen, rattle or wear over time.

Quality you can feel

Lightweight plywood certainly has its place, particularly where vehicle weight is a major constraint. But the difference is smaller than you might think. A Maverick uses about two sheets of 15mm plywood at 75% coverage. In full birch that weighs around 45kg. In lightweight poplar it would be around 28kg. That is about 17kg more, less than 1% of a Transporter's gross vehicle weight, for furniture that is around 2.5 times stiffer.

But at Maverick, we have chosen to put strength, rigidity and long-term quality first.

Stronger foundations. Premium surface materials. Protected plywood. Fewer moving parts.

Because a premium campervan should not just look the part. It should be built to last.

Density and stiffness use representative manufacturer data, not tests of Maverick's own panels. Deflection is calculated for otherwise identical panels using the quoted stiffness values. Weight is calculated from those densities for two 2440 × 1220mm sheets of 15mm plywood, 75% used. Qualitative properties, and other converters' finishes, vary by manufacturer.
