Our vision

Built to get you out there

Why Maverick Outdoors exists, what we believe a camper should be, and the gap in the market we set out to fill.

From the Marines to the workshop

While I was studying engineering, I was also training as a Royal Marines reservist. I have always had a passion for blending daily life with adventure. After that, my career took me to Berlin to lead a tech company. I embraced corporate life: the meetings, the targets, the long days at a desk. It was a good life, but somewhere along the way the outdoors became something I fitted around the edges.

Then came Maverick. A sprocker with more energy than sense, he needed to be out every day, whatever the weather. Walks turned into weekends away, and weekends away turned into the best part of my life. He reminded me of what I loved most about the Marines: being out there, with good people, ready for whatever comes next.

That change in perspective is why this company exists, and why it carries his name. I wanted to stop fitting adventure around life, and start helping other people put it at the centre of theirs.

The philosophy behind every build
Tough enough for me and my Marine mates to head off on a gear-heavy, adventure-heavy weekend. Comfortable, stylish and premium enough that my wife can almost pretend I actually booked a stay at the Ritz-Carlton.

That is the balance we build to. Utilitarian and durable underneath, with luxury and practicality you can feel: real wood finishes, high-quality components, a premium feel throughout, and the off-grid kit to stay out for longer.

Our goal

The UK's best converter

Within the next year, we want to be recognised as the best campervan converter in the UK.

We are already on our way. Our Expedition took 3rd place in Short Wheel Base Campervans at the Caravan and Motorhome Club's Motorhome & Campervan Design Awards 2026.

Why the NEC show matters

Every van is inspected before it can be exhibited at the NEC. That means only converters who are hitting the right safety and quality standards are allowed to exhibit.

The gap we are plugging

We kept seeing campers that looked good on day one and fell short on the things that matter after year three. So we build the other way round.

Safety

Built to type approval standards, or beyond

Everything we do to a van is built to meet or exceed type approval standards.

We are not formally type approved, and here is why. Type approval means crash testing a van with all our kit fitted, at a cost that only makes sense once a converter is ordering around 100 unregistered vans a year direct from VW. We are not that big yet, and we would rather put that money into the vans.

We have passed the National Caravan Council's assessments for its new converter scheme, for both vehicle and habitation standards. The scheme has not formally launched, so we cannot call ourselves NCC approved converters yet. We hope to when it launches, planned for February 2027.

The basics

No shoddy build basics

The parts you never see are the parts that decide how a camper ages. We build every van as if it were our own, and to a standard you would be happy to look under.

Insulation

No compromises underneath

Three-stage insulation and sound deadening come as standard on every build, with insulation built into the floor too. Some converters do not offer insulation at all.

Furniture

No lightweight ply furniture

Our furniture is full birch plywood, not lightweight poplar: around 2.5 times the bending stiffness, finished in EGGER laminate and outdoor-grade lacquer.

Why we use full birch plywood

Utility

Seven captive track rails as standard

Seven captive track rails are built neatly into every van, for lashing kit, hanging bags and changing the layout as your trips change. Every camper is properly functional from day one.

Sleep

A rail bed that works

A top-quality rail bed, for the same reason. No sleeping on seat belts, and no wrestling it open or shut at the end of a long day.

Finishes

Real oak and bamboo

Real oak tambour doors and natural bamboo or oak worktops. Durable, good-looking, and repairable if life leaves a mark.

Power

Off-grid as standard

An inverter and lithium batteries come as standard, charged on the move by a 45A DC-DC charger. Most conversions use 15A, so ours charges about three times as fast.

Electrics

Tested and certified

We are qualified to test your camper's electrics and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC), so you know the system has been properly checked.

No gas

Safer and simpler

No gas on board. Induction cooking and lithium power mean no bottles to carry, refill or have checked, and one less risk in a small space.

Modularity

A van that evolves with you

Our builds are modular. As your trips change, and as we develop new products, your van can change with them, so you can take advantage of what comes next without starting again.

Support

UK-wide support

A network of experts around the UK who understand our builds and have had formal training on them, so help is never too far away.

Components

Every component is high quality

From the fridge and tap to the seats, tracks and furniture. We always look for good value, but we never compromise on component quality. We want your conversion to outlast your van.

Our team

Always here to help

Every member of our support team is trained to help with any issue, wherever you are and whenever it happens.

Europe

Warranties that travel with you

We choose components that can be serviced around Europe, not just in the UK, wherever we can. If the worst happens on holiday, we have got your back, and your holiday's.

Why every roof is an Austops

We have fitted Reimo, West Dubs, Skyline and Austops pop-tops. Austops offers the best of everything, so it is the only roof we fit now.

  • TÜV certified. Austops' VW T5 and T6 range was the only UK pop-top range to be awarded TÜV certification, after the van's structure was measured before and after fitting through a range of manoeuvres. Its T7 roof is TÜV tested too.
  • ISO 9001 accredited. Austops' quality management is independently certified, so every roof is made to the same standard.
  • Made in the UK. Designed, manufactured and assembled in-house at its North Yorkshire factory, with most of its suppliers in the UK too.
  • Built for British weather. Anti-corrosive marine-grade materials, a galvanised powder-coated frame, stainless steel fixings and a marine-grade canvas.
  • Backed for five years. A five-year product warranty from Austops, which is why the pop-top is part of our 5-year cover.

Right for the new T7

The Austops T7 roof is designed specifically for the new Transporter. It fits to the van's original fixing points with a factory-compatible mounting system, so it works with how Volkswagen built the vehicle rather than around it.
